Black Friday

Lucas closed the last folder with a heavy sigh, stabbed his personalized pen into its’ holder, sat back in his chair and rotated his shoulders. His ‘in’ basket was finally empty while the ‘out’ basket almost overflowed with the pile of documents he’d just signed.

Due to the slight downward shift in the banking industry, the past few weeks had been overly demanding with several major problems concerning a couple of Lucas’ clients. In the end he’d sadly had to foreclose a small struggling business and a mortgage that was almost a year in arrears. He had carried both for longer than he should have and it had provided neither party with a successful conclusion.

Unfortunately, the stress of the last two weeks had played havoc with his relationship and as supportive as Stewart had been, Lucas had still felt himself slipping when it came to caring for his Brat. But that was about to change.

Stewart had been rather vocal in expressing his wishes to head south of the border to do some Christmas shopping on Black Friday. The subject had been discussed every year since Lucas and Stewart had got together, but nothing had ever come of it. Lucas did the majority of his shopping on-line while Stewart had begrudgingly gone into Kelowna to do his.

This year it was going to be different. Lucas had informed his partner that they would be leaving for Seattle first thing tomorrow morning. It was an eight hour drive and Lucas had already made hotel reservations for a three night stay. He just hoped his appeasement offering would not come back to bite him.

He got to his feet, grabbed his overcoat and left the office, determined to give Stewart the shopping experience the younger man was anticipating.

Stewart had taken off early from the bakery so that he could go home and start packing for both himself and Lucas. Well, it might be more appropriate to say that his staff had hinted he leave early as he had practically been bouncing all day with the prospect of his upcoming trip.  Lucas had finally succumbed to his annual begging to experience shopping in the US on what they called Black Friday. The day after their Thanksgiving was the signal for the beginning of Christmas and he had heard that the sales were phenomenal. He enjoyed the thrill of the chase to get the best gift at the lowest price, which always meant he could buy more. But he also knew that shopping at crowded stores and malls wasn’t on the very top of Lucas’ list of things to experience, which was why he mostly shopped online.

In addition, Lucas had had a few very hard weeks at the bank. Time away from each other, as well as hard decisions regarding bank clients, had increased the stress level for both of them. As much as Stewart wanted this trip to Seattle, he also wanted it to be fun, or at least not stressful, for Lucas.

As the trip was going to be short, they would usually just share a larger suitcase, but Stewart had been watching the advertisements online for some of the tech stores and wanted to get Lucas an iPad Air.  He didn’t want to risk Lucas finding it, so he decided to use two smaller cases for packing. That way he could hide his purchases from Lucas without risk. He would worry over exactly how he would escape Lucas and make the purchase later. It might not be as hard as he was thinking if the crowds were as bad as he had heard.

He was just finishing adding a sport jacket in each of their cases, just in case they found a nice place to have dinner, when he heard Lucas come home.

Lucas drove the car into the garage instead of leaving it on the drive, and shut down the engine. They’d be leaving early in the morning, well before first light, and he knew neither of them would want to waste time scraping a thick coat of frost off the windows.

He walked through the back door of the kitchen and was greeted by an exuberant young man with a suitcase in each hand.

“Running away from home, are you?” Lucas teased.

Stewart stole a quick kiss before putting the two bags by the back door. “Yes, and I’m taking you with me. I’ve got the perfect adventure planned. We’ll leave right after we eat. Wash up. I’ll set the table and by the time you get back I’ll have the stew served up.”

“Not so fast there, lover boy. As already discussed, we are not leaving before getting in a good night’s sleep. I do not plan to make that long drive after a hard day’s work. However, eating supper sounds good; smells good, too.” Lucas hung his suit jacket over the back of the nearest chair and headed towards the door leading to the lower hall and their small downstairs bathroom.

Stewart laughed as he got out the bowls. “It was worth a try. I can’t wait; midnight shopping and great bargains. I’m hoping to find gifts for the whole family at half the price. Oh, and I might want to shop alone for a while. There are some gifts I need to get and you aren’t allowed to know about them.”

As he washed his hands, Lucas listened to the younger man’s rambling with a smile on his face. It did his heart good to see Stewart so happy and excited.

“If we get off really early tomorrow, we should be checking into our room by two o’clock,” Lucas announced as he took his seat at the table. “Won’t that be close to when the big sales start?” He had never really searched for information about this mammoth bargain event and as a result, knew little to nothing about it. “And I understand you needing some time on your own, sweetheart. Thank you,” he replied in response to a bowl of steaming stew being place in front of him.

“Well,” Stewart started as he passed the plate of crusty bread he brought home from the bakery. “I looked online and many of the stores are starting their sales tomorrow. Some opening as early as six in the evening and if you want to go to some of those stores I won’t object, because I still need to get gifts for my two employees and something special for Mom since she is pitching in while I’m gone. But the best sales and the ones I really want to go to don’t start until the morning, which will mean getting in line the night before. I’ll pack some blankets for us so we will be warm while we wait at the door.”

Stewart wasn’t sure how that announcement would go over, but the electronics store was sure to be packed and he needed to be there early to get that iPad; the deal on that was too good to pass up and would allow him to buy the accessories for it too. The laptops they owned were great, but Lucas usually kept his in their study. The iPad is more portable and this way Lucas could work with his finance group and still spend time with Stewart watching sports or even a movie.

Lucas frowned slightly as he buttered the piece of bread he’d just accepted. “First off, I’ve done my shopping so I won’t be looking for anything in particular. I don’t think I care for the idea of camping out on a city street in the cold. Surely if we get to whatever shop you have in mind early enough, the item you are after will still be in good supply.”

“But that’s half the fun of it. I know I don’t care for the cold, but we could take our rain coats, umbrella and some blankets. I’ll bring a thermos and we can fill it with coffee from the hotel. Please Luc, we’ll probably only do this once and I’d like to see what all the fuss is about. Besides, there’s this deal I really don’t want to miss out on. Everyone will be lining up the night before and all the good door-buster sales will be gone. But if you really don’t want to go, then I can go alone and we can meet up later.”  Stewart crossed his fingers, hoping Lucas would consider that option.

Lucas sadly shook his head as he reached across the table and took his partner’s hand. He’d been worried about Stewart wanting to do something like this and knew it wasn’t an activity he’d allow to take place. “I don’t want to burst your bubble, sweetheart, but neither of us wants to get sick if we can help it. Somehow standing for hours in cold and possibly wet conditions speaks loudly of us taking a chance that should be avoided. We’ll just have to wait until the morning, I’m afraid.”

Stewart’s heart sank at Lucas’ words and he couldn’t keep the look of disappointment off his face. This wasn’t really about staying out all night now. It was something he wanted to be able to say he had participated in, that is until the weather was forecasting rain on top on the near freezing temperature. But it was still about getting that gift for Lucas. At nearly $100 off the original price, those wouldn’t last long.

He squeezed Lucas’ hand to let him know he wasn’t angry, but didn’t say anything. He was afraid if he did, Lucas would call the whole trip off. There was still a chance that he might get one and small as that chance was, it was better than paying full price in Kelowna.

Lucas understood the expression on his partner’s face and sympathized with the younger man who had been hoping for a new adventure.

“How about we finish up in here and get ready for an early night? Maybe we can cuddle up in bed and watch a Christmas DVD to get us in the mood for our shopping excursion. Your choice. What do you say?” was Lucas’ caring proposal.

Stewart knew Lucas was trying to make the refusal easier and the evening pleasant, and he wanted to try too.  “How about ‘Auntie Mame’?  I’m in the mood for something light and fun, and if Auntie Mame isn’t a brat then neither am I.”

“Auntie Mame it is then,” Lucas agreed as he got up from the table and began to clear away the dishes. “So I’m in for an evening with two Brats, huh?” He laughed cheerily when Stewart feigned a glare of indignation.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Stewart woke up almost thirty minutes before the alarm was set to go off. He had been waking up all night and knew this time he might as well get up because rolling over and trying to go back to sleep was pointless. His mind was on the trip and how he was going to get that gift with Lucas so against waiting in line at night.

Rolling out of bed and heading for the en suite for a quick shower, he briefly thought maybe he could tell a small white lie and say the gift was for his mother, a surprise for her, but knew that wouldn't sway Lucas one bit. Maybe Lucas would be open to leaving an hour or two earlier in the morning for their shopping, but he wouldn’t bring that up until they were well on their way to Seattle.

As he climbed out of the shower, he felt a little better about his chances for getting that gift. Now he just had to get Lucas to agree.

Lucas had felt his partner leaving and had turned unto his stomach, spread out his limbs to take up most the bed and immediately fallen into a deep sleep. He often referred to this half hour before the alarm sounded as his ‘dead’ time when he slept so soundly a tornado could pass over them and he’d not be disturbed by it. Only one thing could awaken him during this time and that would be his Brat in distress when a sixth sense of sorts would kick in. Stewart was safe so Lucas dreamed on until the buzzing of the clock radio followed by the morning news had him up and ready to start the day. The light from the en suite had him heading in that direction.

“Good morning, sleepyhead,” Stewart said through his toothpaste-filled mouth. "Want a kiss?"

“Not just yet.” Lucas chuckled as he lightly swatted Stewart’s bare butt. He grinned at his lover’s reflection in the mirror. “But I’ll take a rain-check for as soon as I brush my teeth and all signs of toothpaste have disappeared.”

Stewart quickly finished up and dressed. “I’ll go start the coffee and get the car packed. What do you want to eat? Warm cereal or eggs, bacon and toast?”

“Warm cereal and coffee is good enough,” Lucas answered as he stepped into the shower.

Half an hour later, they were on the road and heading south.

“You better stop that bouncing, babe, or we’ll both be exhausted long before we reach our destination,” Lucas teased with a grin as he placed a hand on Stewart’s left knee and gave it a firm squeeze.

“I just can’t believe we are finally doing this. Well that and maybe too much coffee.”  Stewart wondered briefly if this was the right time, then decided to plow ahead. “You know, Luc, I was thinking that maybe you’re right; midnight is too early and it will be cold out there. So I thought that it would be a lot better if we waited a few hours longer, say to four o’clock. Once we got inside we could split up and then meet back in like an hour.  What do you say? We could still bring the coffee and I packed plenty of blankets in the trunk.”

“We’ve already discussed this, sweetheart. So you already know the answer. But no one can accuse you of not being tenacious. Be patient and I am sure everything will turn out right and you’ll find what you’re after.”

“I know. I’m sorry, Lucas. It’s just that I don’t want to miss out and some things go so much faster than others.  I won’t bring it up again. I promise.” Stewart knew he’d played his last card. Anything more might see them turning around and heading home. “Do you think we can stop soon? I’m getting hungry and could use something warm to drink.”

Before Lucas could respond a deep rumbling was heard. “Seems like my stomach is in agreement,” he laughed. “Keep a look out for a place where you’d like to eat lunch.”

After a lunch of soup and a sandwich, they were back on the road and in Seattle after a couple more hours of driving. Lucas checked them in while Stewart tried to find a newspaper. He was hoping to see sale ads. He saw the hotel was providing a traditional American Thanksgiving meal that evening and wondered if Lucas would want to go.

“Hey, Luc, want me to treat you to a turkey dinner tonight? I’m guessing not too many restaurants will be open, so we might want to consider it. Or we could order room service if you would rather rest after that long drive.”

“Thank you. I accept your kind offer,” Lucas answered formally although his eyes were crinkled at the corners to indicate he was teasing. “And I’ll provide tonight’s entertainment,” he whispered in his lover’s ear as the elevator took them up to the fourth floor. His husky voice clarified any possible doubt, as unlikely as that was, of what he was promising.

The two men quickly unpacked and cleaned up after their trip. Next they enjoyed a leisurely meal during which Lucas kept Stewart sitting on the edge of his seat in anticipation of what was to follow.

The older man has insisted on taking a small booth in the corner and sitting closer than need be to his partner. While Lucas was able to maintain an air of composure throughout the evening, Stewart felt the atmosphere around them crackling with sexual overtones. He couldn’t understand why no one else noticed until he realized it had to do with the way the big man carried himself. Even though Lucas easily caught the eye of many who were seated near them, he was more often than not viewed as just an exceedingly fine-looking, well-dressed business man. Right now, no one but Stewart saw him as a lover on the prowl, and one in a very possessive mood.

“I plan to have my way with you, my handsome one,” Lucas ensured his companion, and he reached over under the cover of the tablecloth to run his hand down the front of Stewart’s pants. The hardness he found there had him smiling wickedly and the younger man blushing in case anyone saw what was going on.

Stewart tried unsuccessfully to squirm away and ended up settling for an inane conversation about a hockey tournament taking place this weekend in Seattle that a couple of boys from Jade Heights would be playing in.

He found it difficult to keep his mind on what he was saying and eventually gave up, at which point Lucas sat back in his seat with a self-satisfied smile on his face.

Dinner over with, they returned to their room where all the promises alluded to were fulfilled.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Lucas didn’t know what disturbed him some time before their agreed upon wake-up call, but as he came around he recalled that Stewart had gotten up during the night to use the bathroom. Lucas bolted upright. That was a while ago, so why was he sleeping in the big bed by himself and why was the room in darkness?

The clock on the nightstand read 5:30 a.m. and Stewart was obviously gone. Lucas hastily dressed and then sat down heavily on the bed when he realized he had no idea where to even begin looking for his Brat.

Stewart sat huddled on the sidewalk, shivering under his blanket and umbrella. The rain had started and while it wasn’t all that windy, the damp air was finding its way into his bones. What was worse, is that he now felt this was all for nothing. The rain kept the crowds away and he was probably no more than the twentieth person in line. When he left the hotel, he was determined to be here regardless of the punishment. But now he knew Lucas was right and wondered if he would ever be forgiven for this bit of disobedience.

Looking at his watch, he knew they would open the doors soon. He was torn between staying to get the gift or heading back to the hotel with the slight hope that he could sneak back in bed before Lucas knew he was gone. He knew he would confess what he did, but at least Lucas wouldn’t be worrying about where he was. Making up his mind, he headed back to the car. He would rather pay full price for this gift than live with the knowledge that he had deliberately disobeyed and showed a complete disregard for their relationship.

As soon as he opened the door, all his hopes of sneaking back in the bed and then being able to tell Lucas in his own way and time about what he done were dashed as he faced a very unhappy partner.

Lucas had been pacing the floor and raking a hand through his hair when the door quietly opened and he turned to see his Brat tip-toeing in. For all the good it did the younger man. They stood for several seconds trying to out stare each other. Lucas’ eyes narrowed warningly and Stewart sensibly ducked his head.

“Where the hell have you been, Stewart?” Lucas ground out between clenched teeth. He didn’t wait for an answer before reaching for his partner and pulling him into his arms. “You’re wet!” he announced unnecessarily as he felt over Stewart’s trembling body. “We’ll talk after you’ve had a warm shower and are dressed in dry clothing.” Although still angry, Lucas was calming down now that he knew his Brat was safe.

Stewart started to explain as he followed his arm, currently in Lucas’ possession, to the bathroom. He wisely stopped speaking when Lucas turned him and with a heavy swat to his backside, told him they would be discussing it once he was out of the shower. He stripped quickly, now very conscious of his exposed bottom, and stepped under the warm spray of water.

As he stood under the shower, he wondered how long he could delay the inevitable and if there would be any chance of explaining this without giving away why he went against Lucas’ wishes. The worst part of all this was that by the time he finished showering, it would almost be exactly the time they had planned to leave for breakfast and then shopping. He leaned his head against the shower wall, wondering how he had made such a mess of things.

While Stewart did what was needed to warm up, Lucas sat down to think things over. Their present situation was definitely not conducive for what would normally take place for this purposeful act of defiance. There was just not enough privacy. But then Lucas had never in the past kept Stewart waiting for whatever chastisement he had coming. He wondered how Stewart would act in response to waiting until they returned home; would he be able to enjoy the rest of the weekend with a reprimand hanging over his head.

“Guess we’ll just have to find out,” Lucas muttered to himself as the bathroom door opened and a billow of steam followed Stewart into the room.

Stewart stepped tentatively into the room, never taking his eyes off Lucas while he walked to the clothes Lucas had laid out on the bed. He knew a spanking was coming and dressing was pointless but still he would feel better, less exposed, with at least a shirt on. He wished Lucas would say something; anything would be better than just being watched.

“Luc, I’m sorry. Really I am. I know you said no, and I know that I went out against your wishes, but at the time it seemed worth it.”  He stopped after seeing the look on his partner’s face.

Lucas merely shook his head, let out a sigh of loving exasperation and held out his arms.

Stewart’s guilt didn’t stop him from moving quickly into those understanding arms, but it did start a flood of tears. When he could finally talk, he tried to apologize again.

“I knew it was wrong when I left and the longer I stood there the more I hated that I’d just ignored our agreement in favour of punishment, hoping that it would make everything all right again. I came back as quick as I could and hoped to tell you before you found out I was gone. I wouldn’t have kept it a secret, Lucas. Please believe me.”  He searched Lucas’ face, hoping for empathy and a sign that he was believed.

“I do believe you, sweetheart,” Lucas assured him. “It’s going to be okay. We’ll take care of it.”

Lucas rested his head on Stewart’s when it dropped back onto his shoulder. He continued to move his hand on Stewart’s back in slow circles under his shirt. “I want you to pay close attention to what I am about to tell you,” he quietly instructed. “Stewart, sweetheart, we are not going to have our discussion now. I’ve decided it can wait until we return home as this is certainly not a place where it can be held. This weekend is about doing some Christmas shopping and checking out Black Friday sales to see if they are all they’re cracked up to be. Does this sound reasonable to you and do you think it is doable?”

Stewart pushed back and stared at Lucas. They had never done this before and he wasn’t sure how he felt. Part of him was glad. He didn’t want to be spanked, but he also knew, no matter how much he wished he didn’t, that there was relief and forgiveness for him in that action and it was something he desperately needed. “Lucas, please, no. Couldn’t we find a way?”

“Sorry, babe, we really do not have a lot of choice here. Please do not see it as additional punishment; I would never do that to you. I am sure the time will pass fast enough if we keep busy. Besides, I do not think I care for the idea of you believing it would be okay to disobey because you’d willingly pay the price later. Hmmm?”

Those words brought more tears to Stewart’s eyes which he quickly brushed away. “I know it was wrong and I am sorry, Luc, really. I won’t cause any more trouble today, but I do still have to go get that gift.  We can still shop separate, right?”

Lucas gave the request some thought and then answered slowly. “I plan to keep you close for the rest of our trip, Stewart. However, I will give you space to do some of your shopping. Finish getting dressed and we’ll head out to the Pacific Place Mall. I’m sure there will be plenty of stores to choose from as well as a coffee shop or two where we can get breakfast.”

As they shopped Stewart stayed quiet, responding mostly only when Lucas asked him a direct question. His mind was on Sunday and having to wait, and wondering whether Lucas was still angry. When he was finally allowed to shop on his own, he was given an hour and was to call Lucas if he would be taking longer. The line at the electronics store wasn’t too bad, mostly because they had enough staff to handle the crowds. When it was finally his turn, he saw that the price of the iPad was quite a bit more than at the other store. However, as he talked to the clerk about how it would be used, he was steered to the Kindle Fire which was considerably cheaper. Knowing this and knowing he didn’t research well enough had him feeling even guiltier about his actions earlier that day. Having made his purchases, he called Lucas anyway just to let him know he was heading back to their meeting place and would wait there. He secretly hoped some of this might work in his favour.

While waiting for his partner, Lucas spent most of the hour window shopping. It was something he had little interest in but it passed the time. He eventually returned to the electronics store where he’d left Stewart and busied himself by reading the sales flyer at the customer service desk. He wasn’t looking for anything in particular and so was easily distracted by the raised voices next to him. A young woman was trying to cancel a lay-away order and was having trouble getting her deposit back.

“I originally purchased this for someone who is no longer a part of my life,” she explained. “It is not something I can use personally. I do not understand why you can’t just put it back on the shelf.”

Lucas found himself attracted to the item being discussed and made an offer. “How about me reimbursing you for the amount you’ve already paid?” he suggested to the woman, who happily accepted.

When she had gone about her business, Lucas turned back to the clerk. “This item is on sale in your flyer. Will you accept the balance as payment in full?”

Just as he completed the arrangements to have his purchase mailed to the bank in Jade Heights, his cell phone vibrated. He turned to see Stewart just outside the store and hurried to catch up to him.

Stewart was briefly confused when he could hear Lucas both over the phone and in his other ear, until he turned and saw Luc beside him. “I’m almost finished shopping,” he said into the phone, smiling at his partner as they continued walking. “Maybe we can meet at the coffee shop and have a cup while I go over my lists?”

“Sounds like a plan to me,” Lucas responded, returning the smile.
As Stewart looked over his list, he mentally ticked off each item he’d bought and finally said, “All I have left is a small stocking stuffer for my mother. Maybe something to go with the coat we bought. A nice pair of gloves would be good, but that’s something I can get at home. This place is starting to get crowded and I’m a bit tired. If you aren’t looking for anything, I think I’d like to leave.”

“There’s nothing I need, and a nap sounds like just the thing so let’s go back to the hotel.” Lucas was remembering the sleep Stewart had missed out on that morning.

Stewart looked hopefully at Lucas. “Maybe we could order lunch from room service and talk about this morning?”

“Lunch is doable,” Lucas amicably agreed with the first suggestion. “But I really do think we talked about this morning as much as we can until we get home,” he patiently stated as he used the remote to unlock the car doors and trunk that was steadily becoming full of packages.

Once inside, Lucas started up the car and then reached over to place a hand on Stewart’s knee. “I am not at all angry, sweetheart, if that’s what been worrying you.” As he turned to concentrate on his driving, he saw a brief look of disappointment pass over his partner’s face.

“I know. You never are. But this is different to anything I’ve ever done before. I’d be mad at me. I’d want to know what I was thinking and a whole bunch of other questions.”

Lucas stopped for a red light and glanced at Stewart. His expression was one of loving understanding. “Oh, I’ve got questions all right. I guess I just might have a slightly easier time waiting for the answers.”

Stewart turned to stare out the window. He knew from past experience that Lucas was immoveable once he’d made up his mind. This trip was not going at all like he thought it would. They were supposed to be having fun but all he could think about was how he’d ruined it all because he couldn’t wait. No, that wasn’t true. It was all because he didn’t want to wait. He had no idea how he would ever make this up to Lucas.

Back in their hotel room, lunch was mentioned again but neither of them was really hungry so it was decided that maybe a nap was in order after all.

Lucas easily picked up on his Brat’s restlessness; just as he had the lack of enthusiastic participation in their earlier conversations. He spooned around his partner and tried to pull Stewart closer, but that action seemed to cause the younger man to become more rigid instead of helping him to relax. Lucas elected to wait it out.

Lying in bed with Lucas wrapped around him was one of Stewart’s favourite places to be. There was always comfort to be found in his arms. But when Lucas tried to pull him close, he realized he didn’t want comfort. He wanted to talk and Lucas was refusing. Lucas being nice to him was just making him more upset and now he was getting angry. Didn’t he also have a say in where and when they discussed things? He knew he would never sleep now, not with all this running around in his head. Making up his mind, he sat up and turned to Lucas. “I don’t want to sleep. I’m not tired. If you want to take a nap, that’s fine. I’ll be quiet. I brought book and can sit over by the window and read it.”

Lucas was getting annoyed. He pulled Stewart down, pushed him onto his side and once more wrapped his arms around his fidgety partner. “Stewart, you need a nap far more than I do, so settle down,” he ordered.

“No, Lucas, I don’t need a nap,” Stewart said as he pushed against Lucas’ arms. “I may be tired but I’m not a child in need of a nap. I’m an adult who needs to talk, but you’ve refused every time I tried. Why can’t you see that?”  Stewart’s voice had taken on that tone he always got when near to tears.

Lucas let go of his partner, which allowed Stewart to sit up and face him. “Okay,” Lucas slowly responded. “We both know you deliberately chose to disregard my directives concerning this morning. I think we both know why.  And you’ve apologized several times. It is the end of this type of discussion that I prefer not to hold in a place other than our own home. So exactly what do you wish to add to your side of this particular conversation?”

Stewart recognized that tone in Lucas’ voice and it usually never ended well for him. Now that the moment was here, he was wishing he had waited. Gathering his thoughts, he pushed back to sit against the headboard and drew his knees up. “It sounds really bad the way you say it, but it was even worse, Lucas. It was more than just disobeying. I tried to get you to let me go out and when you wouldn’t, I planned this. Right down to knowing I would be punished and deciding it was worth it. I just tossed our relationship aside in favour of what I wanted to do. I hate that I did it. I hate how I feel now and it’s eating me up inside.” As he spoke, he had begun to cry and when he finished speaking, he laid his head down on his knees.

Lucas sat up beside Stewart and mulled over all that had said. Placing an arm around the crying man’s shoulders and drawing him close to his side, he talked softly next to Stewart’s ear, “Hush, sweetheart. Stop crying. We are going to work on this together as soon as you’ve calmed down.” He pressed a clean handkerchief into Stewart’s hand.

Stewart didn’t raise his head. He just leaned hard into Lucas’ side, taking the comfort that was offered. As he began to calm down, Lucas’ words finally registered.

“I’ll do anything to make this right between us, but I thought you said we couldn’t take care of it at the hotel?”

“And we won’t be,” Lucas confirmed. “I understand that a lot of what happened this morning is troubling you, but one thing I want you to know is that you have not damaged our relationship. Grant it, this has not been the mini-vacation we had planned but at least we’ve done the most important errands on our list and then some. Our shopping is finished, so we are going to pack up and head home.”

“Please, Lucas, I’m not ready to leave yet. I just wanted to talk, to make you understand,” Stewart pleaded at this announcement.

“I probably understand more than you realize, Stewart. But we’ll have more than enough time to talk on the drive home. Maybe you can consider our early departure as part of your punishment. We actually have several issues to discuss during the trip. For instance, you endangering yourself comes to mind. You had no idea about the size of the crowd before you got there, and while most would have been shoppers like yourself, there was always the possibility of someone wanting to cause havoc by pushing to start a fight or even pulling off a crime like pick-pocketing. If I objected to us facing something like that as a couple, why would you think I’d be happy with you being there on your own?”

“But now you’re being punished too,” Stewart mumbled, though he didn’t dare complain further about leaving.  It was a deserved punishment for himself even if Lucas hadn’t intended it that way. “I hadn’t really thought about problems with the crowds or someone stealing. Really, Luc; all you said was you didn’t want to stand in the cold and rain. I didn’t think about there being another reason and I thought your refusal was unreasonable, so I just went.”

“Then I guess I should have explained myself better. I’ll remember to next time. Although the bottom line is that I didn’t want either of us standing outside for an unreasonable length of time. But enough talking for now; we have to get a move on. We’ve a long ride ahead of us, plus an undetermined time at customs. But you’ll be able to sleep during the ride.” An eight-hour drive with an over-tired, cranky Brat seemed daunting, but Lucas felt up to it under certain conditions.

Stewart stood up, headed for the small closet where they had put their suitcases and brought back both of them, plus the clothes hanging in there. His thoughts were now on clearing customs without Lucas seeing what he’d bought. He might be in trouble for his actions but he still wanted the gift to be a surprise. “I bought a lot of things here and one of them was for you, so I’ll need to make a separate declaration from yours. Do you think I’ll end up paying a lot of duty?”

“We’re entitled to a personal exemption of four hundred dollars between us, and I don’t have anything to declare. Due to the prices to be had at these Black Friday sales, I don’t imagine you’ll owe too much. However, the procedure will take up more time.”

Both men shut their suitcases, shrugged into their overcoats, and turned to leave. Lucas placed a hand around Stewart’s shoulder to waylay him.

“Rest assured, sweetheart, regardless of how late it is when we get home, you will be going to bed with a mighty sore backside. Then the slate will be wiped clean. Am I understood?”

Stewart’s face heated up at that announcement, his eyes on the floor. All he could manage was a mumbled, “Yes, sir.”

“Good man!” Lucas leaned down and kissed his partner’s lips. “Now let’s get out of here.”

Half an hour later, they were on the highway heading north. They’d picked up sandwiches and coffee after checking out of their room.

Lucas drained the last of his beverage and put the empty cup in its’ holder. “All right, sweetheart, you wanted to talk and I am very interested in hearing what you have to say.”

They had been riding in relative silence since leaving the hotel, with Lucas driving and Stewart staring out the window trying to get his thoughts together. He knew Lucas would eventually ask and now that the moment was here, he wished that Lucas would have insisted he sleep first.

“When I left this morning, I was a bit angry. Well, maybe not angry so much as determined. When we planned this trip, I wanted to do the whole experience. I thought it would be fun being with you and waiting outside the stores. It seemed like an adventure. When you said no because it would be cold and wet, I thought you were being unreasonable and also because…. well there was a gift I wanted. I knew it would be popular and I was afraid I would miss out on getting it. I knew if I went alone I would be punished. But I also knew that after it was over, everything would be fine between us again. I decided, knowing it would turn out all right, that it was worth it. I don’t know what to say that could ever make this better, Luc. I’m sorry that I did it and I wish I could turn the clock back and make that decision all over again, but I can’t. I just want you to know that I’ve never done anything like this before and I never will again.”

Lucas had kept quiet during his partner’s explanation. He really did appreciate where Stewart was coming from and hoped he could set the younger man’s mind at ease. “I’m sorry the trip from the get-go didn’t go the way you had anticipated, sweetheart. I truly empathize with your disappointment. I know you’ve never done anything like this before, as I am aware of you always trying to live within the perimeters of our relationship. While it may not excuse your blatant disobedience, it does make it understandable. It is also definitely forgivable.” He reached over and squeezed Stewart’s nervously bouncing leg. “Of course there are after-effects to be faced.”

Stewart's eyes were heavy with tears but the small smile he bestowed on his partner was genuine. “I know and I’m almost looking forward to it. Almost.” After a minute he had to ask the one question that had been on his mind. "Luc, is there more punishment? I feel like there should be something more”

“There is nothing more, my love. A physical reminder is all there will be, promise,” Lucas vowed. “Come morning, we start anew.” He reached for Stewart’s hand and lovingly let his thumb gently draw circles on the back of it.

Stewart held tight to Lucas’ fingers for a few minutes. He needed that reassurance and having gotten it, he felt like a weight had been lifted from him. “I think I could sleep now, if you don’t mind driving for a little while without company?”

“I don’t mind at all. You could do with some extra shut-eye.” Lucas tuned the radio on to some classical music and kept the volume down low while he kept an eye on his precious Brat who slept next to him. He wasn’t looking forward to what lay before them, but knew it was needed if his promises were to be kept.

Christmas Day finally arrived with Black Friday having gradually become a distant memory. Or had it?

Each man passed the other one last gaily wrapped present. Neither of them noticed that the size of both was exactly the same. They hastily removed the ribbons and paper; then held their gift up for the other to see.

First Lucas and then Stewart began to laugh. Both men had given and received a Kindle Fire HDX.

“It looks like we’re always going to have a reminder of that particular shopping excursion after all.” Lucas’ comment had them both laughing even louder.

The End

Life's Temporary Setbacks

(With an appearance by Chandi.)

Chandi glanced up from what he was reading when he sensed someone sliding into the booth across from him. Putting down the menu, he beamed a welcome. “Hello, Stewart. It’s nice of you to join me. How are things?”

Stewart smiled briefly at his longtime friend. “Hey, Chandi. I saw your bike outside. I hope you don’t mind the company because I could sure use some. What looks good today?”

“I’m undecided at the moment. Both the seafood platter and the chicken quesadilla look delicious.” Chandi closely studied the man sitting in front of him and frowned. “What gives, Stewart? You seem a little out of sorts. Are you having problems?”

Stewart used the brief distraction while the waitress took their drink orders to put his thoughts together. He needed to talk but also had to be sure he didn’t give too much information to his friend. He was still a bit tender from the spanking he’d received last night, when the discussion he and Lucas were having turned into a tantrum that would have made a two-year-old proud. And he never did get around to telling Lucas what the real problem was.

“It’s just that Lucas has been so busy lately with his new online venture, and what used to be one hour a couple of nights a week is now two or three hours a night.”

“Yeah, it sucks when your partner isn’t available when you feel you most want him,” Chandi sympathized. “Eric is off on another hunt for antiques; which is the reason I’m eating out and on my own. I promised to eat at least one substantial meal a day while he was away. I just didn’t feel up to cooking for myself.” He wasn’t comfortable with the thought of sharing more of the problem he and his partner had had lately with his poor eating habits. He certainly didn’t want to divulge how they had handled it.

“Jeez, Chandi. Do you really have to be told to eat? Doesn’t your stomach tell you when you’re hungry? Lucas can be a mother-hen, but he’s not that bad.” Chandi’s admission made Stewart laugh and he couldn’t help but tease him about it.

Chandi used the pretext of chewing his food to mull over how he wanted to respond. Deciding on the direct approach, he swallowed, shrugged his shoulders and honestly admitted the error in judgment on his part that had led to Eric’s assistance with making better choices. “My stomach can still send out proper messages. Unfortunately that doesn’t necessarily mean I answer appropriately. Such was the case a few weeks ago when I mistakenly thought I’d gained weight and wanted to drop a couple of pounds before my yearly physical. Eric didn’t exactly approve of my methods.”

“Yeah, isn’t that the way it usually goes? Always there when you do something you’d rather they not know about. When it comes to my health, Luc can be such a Top... er, total worry-wart.” Stewart quickly ducked his head to hide his reddening cheeks and hoped Chandi hadn’t noticed what he’d said.

Chandi toyed with the straw in his glass and studied his friend. He had immediately zeroed in on Stewart’s slip of the tongue and was quickly realizing the other man was embarrassed by his unintentional blunder. He thought it best to ease the situation by being as straight forward as possible.

Clearing his throat and leaning forward, Chandi softy announced, “Eric is a Top too, Stewart. I learned of my needs a few years ago and consider myself lucky to have a partner who loves me enough to willingly meet those needs. Right now, even though Eric is not with me, he is still in charge so-to-speak. My job is extremely demanding and I think I do it well. But once the uniform comes off, I am more than grateful to let Eric take over the decision making in our personal lives. I am very comfortable with who I am and most definitely with who Eric is.”

Seeing the remaining look of uncertainty in Stewart’s eyes, Chandi went on. “You and I are not the only ones here in Jade Heights who live this lifestyle. You’d be surprised at how many do.” Chandi’s smile widened when he saw his friend blink in astonishment.

Stewart just stared at Chandi, trying to take in everything he had just been told. His first reaction after this revelation was to deny his blunder and change the subject. He didn’t know how Lucas would react to him revealing that private side of their lives, but also because he didn’t want to be seen as weak. He knew what spin some people might put on his place, the Brat’s place, in these relationships: juvenile and incapable.

If he wasn’t being teased, he could definitely use some advice. He felt like Lucas’ job was pulling him away far too often these days, but each time Stewart tried to talk to Lucas, his temper got the better of him. He decided to take a chance on Chandi’s honesty. Though he found he couldn’t make eye contact, looking up only as far as Chandi’s top button.

“Chandi, you better not be making a joke at my expense, because what you just said is what I have with Lucas. It’s not that I can’t guide my own life; I can, but I’m drawn to and respond to the strength and dominance that Lucas wears like a coat. So you, umm, you really let Eric take charge; to make the decisions?  Decisions you are fully capable of making and you don’t mind?”

“Not only don’t I mind, Stewart, I requested it. I trusted Eric to do what was right by me and he has never once betrayed that trust.” Making note of his friend’s continued discomfort, Chandi set about putting Stewart’s mind at ease. “Look, you and I have known each other most our lives. We grew up together, were in some of the same classes in schools, and attended the same church. Although not exactly nerds, we sure as hell weren’t part of the popular ‘in’ group, were we?” It was a rhetorical question so Chandi forged ahead. “You are the only one I’ve told about this. It appears to be just one more thing we have in common. I would never share this info with anyone else.” Chandi hoped Stewart realized he was making a vow concerning both their situations and not just his own.

“For me it was more Lucas’ idea, but I agreed with him. It works for us too. Lucas can be intense at times, but I wouldn’t change what we have for anything. I like that he is in charge, but I’m wondering if I sometimes take it for granted. Lately he has been so busy he doesn’t have time for us anymore and I’m really beginning to resent it.”

“Yeah, I know what you mean. I kind of have to put up with Eric being gone at times even though I understand the need for his business to expand.” Chandi’s voice was sympathetic. “I guess from your demeanor that you haven’t been successful in getting your feelings across to Lucas, right?”

“No. In fact by the time I get around to bringing it up, I’m so mad that I end up sounding petty and whiny, and that never ends well. Then I won’t talk further about what is really bothering me. Like last night, I just accused him of using his time with the group as a way of avoiding helping out with the after dinner clean-up and wanting to avoid spending time with me. This online venture was only supposed to be a short amount of time in the evenings, but now he spends a couple of hours on it every night. By the time he gets offline, he’s either too tired, it’s time for bed, or he’s upset and doesn’t want to talk about what happened. I don’t know what to do about it. Do you have any ideas?”

Chandi held up his empty pop glass to indicate he wanted a refill. When another beverage appeared in front of him and the waitress had moved on, he slowly shook his head. “I’d say the only thing you can do is talk to him. Only try harder to keep your cool. Don’t wait until you’re so pissed off, you can’t explain yourself. I know for a fact, that is exactly what Eric would expect me to do if I was having a problem with something; especially if it concerned us and our relationship.”

“That’s easier said than done. He tried to talk to me about the activities. He said the group had lost focus and even after repeated attempts at sending notes reminding the membership that the point was to discuss financial investments and not for their personal needs, nothing changed. And I barely listened. He had spent far longer online than our original agreement and I was too angry to listen. I know I should have been supportive but all I could think about was myself. Afterwards, I apologized but still never told him what was really bothering me.  How do I say I want him to end this when he was so excited about the idea of helping people out? I really don’t want him to stop, just spend more time with us.”

“Maybe if you showed a bit of interest and made a suggestion or two, things would improve. Start off by asking questions. Lucas just might need a listening ear. You know; a sounding board or something. Can’t hurt to try, right?”

“Well, I don’t know anything about the financial side of it, but it can’t hurt to be there with him and maybe try to facilitate the meetings. If nothing else, it would have us spending a bit of time together.”  Stewart grabbed the two checks that the waitress had placed on the table and then smiled at Chandi.  “I probably should get home. Do you mind if I pick this up?  It’s the least I can do for the help you’ve given tonight. And maybe sometime in the near future, we could talk more about our lifestyle. It would be great to have someone to discuss it with; maybe some words of wisdom to keep me out of trouble?”

“You’re welcome to pick up my check any time, my friend,” Chandi laughed, grabbing up his helmet and sliding out of the booth. “We can meet up as often as we’re both free to do so. Meanwhile, good luck with your plans.” He waited while Stewart paid the bill, then they walked outside together. “See you soon,” Chandi exclaimed as he waved and drove off.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

As he pulled into the driveway, Stewart still had no clear idea of how he would approach Lucas. He also wasn’t sure of the reception he would receive after just leaving a note that Lucas’ dinner was in the oven and that he would be eating out tonight. It’s not that they didn’t eat apart, but usually they discussed it in advance.

As he came into the kitchen it was obvious that Lucas had not come out to eat yet, and no evidence that Lucas had even read the note. As he took the plate out of the oven he found his anger rising at not even being missed, but then stamped hard on those feelings to calm down. He knew now how he could get Lucas’ attention and perhaps help him out.

Stewart threw away the dried up remains of the casserole on the plate and set to making a sandwich with a small salad of cut up fruit on the side. As he walked into the study with the tray of food, he saw Lucas sitting there with his head resting on his hands and a very frustrated look on his face.

“Hey babe, can you take a quick break for a meal and conversation with someone who really misses spending time with you? I won’t name any names but it’s me.” Stewart smiled warmly to take the sting out of his words as he pushed the laptop out of the way and placed the tray in front of Lucas.

“I have a better idea,” Lucas smiled up at his partner. He reached over and closed the page he was on, before pulling Stewart down onto his lap and kissing him soundly. “That group has taken up enough of my time as late and I am beginning to think it was an error on my part to even start it.”

Just then his stomach growled, causing both men to laugh. “I wonder if that’s a sign of agreement or a complaint to let me know it’s empty and wants refueling.”

Stewart reluctantly slid off Lucas’ lap to allow him to eat, and pulled up a side chair to sit near him. “All right, you eat and let me tell you about my plan. I don’t want you to give up the group. Well, I did in the beginning. But I spent some time with Chandi tonight and he gave me some ideas that I hope you’ll be open to. It will allow us to spend time together in the evenings and maybe cut down on frivolous the conversations that are taking place on your group.” Stewart smiled a little guiltily as he continued. “But first I want to apologize for leaving tonight. I did leave a note but it doesn’t appear that you saw it. And I know I could have interrupted to tell you I was leaving, but at the time I was mad that you were still online. I know that’s not how we handle things, but at the time I just couldn’t see straight. I hope you aren’t angry.”

“I’m not at all angry, sweetheart. I actually heard you go out and it had crossed my mind to go after you, until I realized you might like a cooling off period. I actually had to take one myself this evening due to the needless number of postings on the group.” Lucas pointed at the half empty bottle of water that sat on the desk as he paused to take a large bite of his sandwich and wash it down. “I had all but decided to close it down but for the fact that there are still members who need my help. I guess we can use it as a new activity of sorts that we can do together.”

Stewart’s smile was huge as he launched into his plan. “Well, I know I’ve been resenting the time you spend with these people. But if you want to keep the group active, then I want to be a part of it. I haven’t really investigated how I would do this, but what would you think about me being a moderator of sorts? You could introduce me to the group and explain that I won’t be answering questions about the financial side. However, if the group continues to get sidetracked onto issues that don’t relate to the reason for you being online, I would step in as a facilitator to move the group back on track. Just remind them that time is short and that if they have personal issues to discuss, they can contact their friends through off-group emails. Of course I would need to work on my approach, but it would save you from losing control and being the heavy.”

“Hmm, so you’d be policing the group for me, huh? Sounds like a good plan; I like it. I’ll let you know when things are beginning to veer off track. Then if you feel comfortable enough, you can step in. Maybe now would be a good time to clarify the purpose of the group and the somewhat less than necessary subject matter that seems to creep in from time to time. Uncontrolled, it kind of develops a life of its’ own. I don’t always catch it until it is too late.” Lucas kissed his partner once again and turned the laptop to face them both. “Ready?”

“Ready!” Stewart enthusiastically declared as he shifted his chair closer. “Though after tonight, I think I should use my own laptop to access the group. That way if you are typing a response to someone, I can step in without interrupting you.”

“You’ll have to join up first,” Lucas reminded him as he signed back into the group. “For now, I’ll just explain some of the group’s purpose. I had originally set it up as a method to keep folks informed of their mortgage and/or loan options in a more relaxed setting than going into a bank or finance company. Over time I expanded it, upon request, to include discussions pertaining to debt resolutions, asset management, investment opportunities, various insurance plans, and small business ideas, to mention a few. It was a question about wills and probates that first caused things to go a little haywire. People began talking about personal experiences other than financial issues, which in turn developed in small side-chats of sorts that had a tendency to upset some of the others. This is a fire that took me three quarters of an hour to put out earlier and will give you an idea of what we have to watch out for.”

“All right, I can join. But it would be easier if you sent me an invitation. That way my acceptance will be automatic.” Stewart kept his eyes on the computer as he confessed, “Luc, you know I don’t understand the financial side, so I can’t be of any help there. But I’ll do my best to keep your group from wandering off the subject. All I want is to be able to have some time with you in the evenings and if that means spending an hour an evening watching you talk shop, it’s worth it. Maybe I’ll even learn a thing or two.”

“The invite is a good idea, sweetheart. However, I am no longer going to devote more than an hour or so a couple of evenings a week to the group. If members need more help than I am able to give, they’ll have to find it elsewhere; even if it means they have to pay for it.”

Lucas took a moment to send the invitation before turning off the computer for the second time this evening. “I think it is time I deploy my time in a much more pleasant activity. And that is doing whatever comes to mind when I am with you.” He pulled Stewart onto his lap and began nuzzling his partner’s neck. “I owe you big time, precious Brat of mine. I’ve been far too negligent lately, and I’m so very sorry. I know better and should have put a stop to this foolishness a while back. I plan to make it up to you in spades.”

Stewart tilted his head to allow Lucas better access. “I know you aren’t perfect and I know you didn’t mean to spend more time with them than you had originally planned. I could have been a bit more understanding and maybe more honest in telling you I was beginning to resent the time you were spending on-line. Instead I made it harder for you and kept you guessing at what my mood of the day would be. I’ll accept your apology if you’ll accept mine?” He didn’t wait for an answer as Lucas turned his attention to some of Stewart’s more sensitive spots. “Mmmm yes, right there.”

A bit of nibbling on his ear-lobe accompanied by a soft growl was the only answer given. It was acknowledged as a confirmation of agreement. Lucas’ hands slowly stripped his partner of clothing while his lips never strayed far from the adored body he was uncovering.

Aside from hungry moans and groans from both men, the only other sounds were the unzipping of zippers and the popping of a couple of Lucas’ shirt buttons as he worked rapidly to rid himself of his own attire.

He stood up and pushed Stewart steadily towards the leather sofa where he continued his assault.

Lucas felt certain they’d be back on the right track in no time and he trusted that his partner felt the same. He truly believed that oft times these little setbacks made a relationship stronger.

For Two Only

Lucas looked up and smiled at the young man walking into his office. Stewart was here for his enforced morning break from the bakery and appeared to be bearing gifts.

After nudging the door closed behind him, Stewart set two cups of coffee and two heart-shaped cupcakes on the desk. Then he walked around and plunked himself down on his partner’s lap, obviously looking for a short cuddle before wheeling over another chair and sitting down.

“These look almost too good to eat, sweetheart.” Lucas closely examined the treats that were so nicely decorated for the occasion.

Stewart smiled mischievously as he reached over and tried to snatch Lucas’ cupcake back. “Well if you don’t want it...”

“Oh, I want it all right,” Lucas growled and held the cupcake out of reach.

The two men spent a quiet fifteen minutes enjoying their cake and coffee, and light conversation.

Pulling open a drawer, Lucas drew out a plastic red rose with a small heart hanging on the stem and handed it to Stewart. “Push down on the top of it,” he instructed.

Stewart did so and the flower lit up. “This is kind of silly,” he muttered.

“Well what can you expect for a buck and a quarter?”

“Is that all I’m worth to you? Heck, the cupcakes are worth more than that.” Stewart’s expression was one of outrage mingled with a touch of hurt feelings.

Lucas gently tugged his partner back onto his lap. “You are too precious for me to ever put a monetary value on, my love.” Lucas kissed the pouting lips in an attempt to mollify the love of his life. He wondered if it was his words or the kiss that pacified man in his arms. “By the way, I want you home on time this evening as I’ve made arrangements with the Trillium Inn for a special dinner.”

“I really don’t want to go there tonight, Lucas. It’s going to be crowded and we’ll have to dress up. I’d rather do something more private for Valentine’s Day.”

“I thought you would, which is why I am having our meal delivered. You’ll be able to dress down. And for dessert, you can undress completely.” Lucas wiggled his eyebrows and tickled Stewart’s ribs, causing his partner to giggle.

Pushing away from his tormentor, Stewart announced his plans to get back to work. “I’ll see you later; right on time,” he promised. With that, he stuck the rose between his teeth, sent Lucas a flirtatious wink and sashayed out the door with hips swinging in an exaggerated, teasing manner. Lucas’ roar of laughter followed him.

Two men eagerly awaited an evening meant only for lovers.

The End

The Aftermath

Co-written by Dee, Lou and Jodie

Characters: Lucas/Stewart & Eric/Chandi

Chandi sat gazing into his mug of beer, his thumbs lightly grazing over the condensation on the side while tiny rising bubbles hypnotized him. Hanging out here at the lounge was fast becoming a habit and a subject Eric had already brought up more than once.

Of course this evening could be considered Eric’s fault. After all, the big guy had insisted on going to the bi-weekly meeting of the fund-raising committee for the Lions Club, of which Eric was a member along with Lucas, Kipper, and several other outstanding folks in the community. Chandi had been invited to take part but had turned down the offer. He found the meetings boring and time consuming, especially when a couple of the members could never agree to anything suggested and yet were unable to come up with ideas of their own. Besides, Chandi hated politics. He got enough of that as Chief of Police and wasn’t about to use his spare time playing nice with people who nearly drove him mad.

He glanced at the man sitting beside him and mumbled, “Tell me how we come to find ourselves here yet again, Stewart.” A groan was the only response as his drinking companion put his head down on the bar and closed his eyes. Chandi went back to staring at the bubbles. At least this time Eric couldn’t accuse him of drinking alone.

It had been two weeks since the incident that had forever changed the lives of many; a bank robbery gone bad. Okay, so the perpetrator had been arrested but not before hurting two men, traumatizing countless others, and getting himself shot. Nothing like this had ever happened in Jade Heights before and although all the officers had been through the necessary training for hostage negotiation, one of his men had not been as prepared as the Police Chief would have liked. The worst crimes his officers had dealt with in the past had been disturbances of the peace, driving violations, break and entries, minor drug arrests and the like; never anything so major and it would not be something people got over any time soon.

Chandi had been working in his office, trying to get the coming month’s schedule sorted out when the call of the bank’s silent alarm came in. He and his officers were on the scene in less than ten minutes.

After his failed attempt to rob the bank, the would-be thief had run out the bank door and into an alley at the first sound of the police siren. As luck would have it, the first door he found unlocked had been Stewart’s bakery.

“Maybe it would help to talk about it all, Stewart; right from the beginning. I’m sure any therapist worth his salt would tell you keeping it bottled up, will only make things worse. What do you say, man?” Chandi put his hand on the other man’s shoulder and gave it a gentle shake. “Come on, we’ll move over to a booth where we can have a bit more privacy.”

Stewart wasn’t ready to go home yet. Lucas would still be at his committee meeting and being alone in the house with his thoughts didn’t hold any appeal for Stewart. He told Lucas he would be with Chandi tonight, he just hadn’t said where. Lucas wouldn’t give a second thought to him spending time with Chandi as they occasionally got together on those nights that Lucas and Eric attended the Lions Club meetings.

Nodding his acceptance to the invitation, Stewart lifted his mug and drained the contents before banging it down on the bar and then holding up two fingers to the bartender. If he was going to do this he knew he would need something more to fortify him, he hadn’t even shared his fears with Lucas yet. This would be his third beer and though Lucas never restricted his drinking, he was fairly sure his Top would have a comment or two if he found out he was using it as a crutch, but the beer offered a way to hide from those thoughts that kept haunting him.

He was never successful pushing the memory of that day to the furthest corner of his mind. It was his partner who had been injured in the bank and his employee who had been injured in the bakery. Each night he came home to see the remnants of the scar on Lucas’ face from where he had been hit when the gunman thought Lucas was trying to stop him. Then there was Tony, his employee, who hadn’t yet returned to the bakery as his head injury was more serious.

Stewart shook his head, trying to clear his thoughts, and picking up the freshly poured beers, he followed Chandi to a booth at the back of the lounge. He placed one of the drinks in front of Chandi and took a seat opposite him.

The two men sat in silence staring at their mugs, not quite willing to look at each other. Finally Chandi broke the silence with a nervous laugh and said, “I suppose since this was my idea, I should go first.”

He took time to gather his thoughts and swallowed a mouthful of beer while taking in his friend’s demeanour and body language. Chandi’s extra training had involved an extensive course in profiling. The fact that he and Stewart had known each other since elementary school helped. Having spent the better part of the evening furtively watching Stewart and coming to the conclusion they were trying to overcome similar hurdles, he felt somewhat comfortable trusting his long-time friend enough to open up to him.

“I’ve tried talking things over with Eric and although he is sympathetic to my rioting emotions, he’s not altogether pleased with how I’m handling them. Just when I think I’ve got a grip on things, my mind dredges up the memories of arriving at the bank and finding Lucas on the floor, his cheek bleeding profusely from a large gash under his left eye. Then finding out the robber had gotten away, only to get word he was holed up in your bakery was just an added glitch to apprehending him. Discovering he’d also attacked Tony made the situation that much grimmer. I can almost understand why one of my men kind of lost it. I’m pretty much able to hold the recollections and mental pictures at bay when I’m busy at work; it’s in the evenings when I’m tired that they resurface with a vengeance. I can barely imagine what you’re going through.” Chandi sighed deeply and went back to toying with the condensation on the side of his mug while waiting for Stewart’s reply.

Stewart looked up in surprise at Chandi’s last words. He hadn’t until this moment given much thought to someone else going through what he was much less understanding how it feels. Hearing that gave him the courage to start talking, even if he couldn’t tell Chandi the more personal side of his feelings.

“Lucas pushes me to talk to him, especially after I wake up in a cold sweat from a nightmare. It’s always the same nightmare and I’ve told him some of the things that I see, but I don’t want to put all that on him right now. How fair would that be for me to dump all this on him when he has to have his own ghosts. Do you know I haven’t even been back to the bank since it happened; just passing on the way to the bakery brings memories flooding back. I know Luc understands because since I re-opened the shop, he’s been taking the deposits into the bank for me.” Stewart paused for a minute and took a long draw on his beer.

“It’s when I’m in the bakery alone in the mornings or during the slow time after lunch that I have way too much time to think. I should never have left Tony alone in the shop, but it had been rather slow that morning, so I thought I would drop in on Lucas and take over a few treats for their coffee break. I can’t help but wonder if I had stayed would this have turned out differently?” He was secretly hoping Chandi would assure him his presence wouldn’t have made a bit of difference, but deep down he knew that had he been there, there would have been two people to contend with and that piece of scum would probably not have attacked Tony.

With just the briefest of pauses he continued, “And my being at the bank didn’t improve the situation there either.” Stewart swallowed hard on the lump in his throat before he could finish, “Lucas told me to stay in his office, but I didn’t listen. I should have listened! I’m the rea…” He was going to say ‘the reason Lucas had been hit’ but he wasn’t ready to share that information with Chandi just yet. So instead he said, “I honestly don’t know how you do this every day, knowing that something like this could happen again.” Stewart glanced down at his rapidly dwindling beverage and asked, “Are you ready for another?”

“Sure, why not? It’s my treat this time.” Chandi signalled for the waitress and in a matter of minutes two new beers appeared in front of them. Their empty mugs and the money Chandi had put on the table were quickly whisked away. He took another big swallow before looking his friend in the eye and seriously informing him of a few facts. “First off, there’s a very good chance Lucas or someone else would have been hurt regardless of who was there and who wasn’t. The would-be thief was a powder-keg ready to blow at any minute. As for you being at the bakery when the guy showed up, it would probably have involved both you and Tony being injured. The perp had the element of surprise on his side and his increasing rage at having been unsuccessful in robbing the bank, would have made it almost impossible for any untrained people to restrain him or fight him off. We just have to be thankful nothing even more dreadful went down that morning.

Chandi smiled to himself. He was pleased to find that talking with someone on the same page as himself was helping and he hoped Stewart was beginning to feel better for having opened up some as well. He certainly seemed to be, or was it just the beer influencing the slightly more relaxed appearance.

“I can do this every day because it’s my job and I’ve been trained to do it well,” Chandi grinned. “It isn’t walking past the crime scene that bothers me so much as having to deal with Internal Affairs and the Town Council.” He shuddered and momentarily closed his eyes as the grim reminder of having to suspend one of his officers surfaced.

Stewart wanted to believe Chandi; they were the exact words he had wanted to hear. But still there was this nagging voice in his head that kept saying ‘if you’d only stayed at the shop’ that he couldn’t seem to ignore. And then there was the nightmare which never ended the same way as the real robbery. In that terrible dream, instead of hitting Lucas with the gun, the robber fired it at him and it was at that moment each time that he would jerk awake from the nightmare, sweating. Once or twice he had even screamed out Lucas’ name. He would never tell Lucas how the nightmare ended, only that he would wake up when the gunman hit Lucas. And he was angry at Lucas for not taking care of his own safety. He should have given the man what he wanted. After all, the bank was insured and he saw no reason why Lucas would put his life on the line for other people’s property.

Chandi sat watching emotions play over Stewart’s face. He could tell something was really bothering his friend, but as yet Stewart hadn’t said a word, so he tried to draw him out. “Hey, tell me what you’re thinking about.”

Stewart was startled out of his thoughts. He wasn’t sure he wanted to tell Chandi what was on his mind just now, so instead he picked up on the last thing Chandi said. He had wanted to ask him about it ever since he heard about the investigation and now seemed to be the perfect time. “Chandi, is it standard procedure for an incident involving a shooting to be investigated? I heard a couple of RCMP officers were in town asking a lot of questions. Most of them had to do with how you handled the situation and also about Constable Lambert.”

Chandi wasn’t fooled by the question. He’d been a policeman too long to be taken in by the change of subject. “I’ll answer that question after you tell me what’s really on your mind.”

Stewart frowned. He didn’t like being called a liar, even if it was said nicely. But looking at Chandi’s face, he realized his friend was only trying to help and maybe if he told someone it might make the nightmare go away. He had nothing to lose and Chandi was willing to listen so he decided to give it a try. “I’ve been having a really disturbing nightmare lately. It starts out just like that day. Most of this you already know because it’s what I told you when you took the report after the robbery. I took a tray of croissants and cookies over to the bank. Lucas and I were having a cup of coffee when suddenly he gets up and tells me to stay in his office. He goes over to the teller’s station and I see him approach the man standing there. I couldn’t hear what was said but, when the man turned, I could see he had a gun. By then I had already stepped out of Lucas’ office. The robber starts yelling ‘give me the money’ over and over. Lucas was trying to calm him down and talk him out of doing this. The man is getting more agitated and waving his gun around, and that’s when I yelled for Lucas to just turn over the fuckin’ money. Then Lucas turns around to push me behind him and when he turns back, it happens.” Stewart’s voice had risen a bit and his breathing was heavier as he remembered the end of the dream.

Chandi reached across the table to wrap a hand firmly around his friend’s left wrist and give it a gentle shake. “Hey; easy does it.” When he could see that Stewart was calmer, he continued. “So the gunman hits Lucas; then what?”

Stewart looked up at Chandi. “He doesn’t hit him; he shoots him! I wake up right after I hear the gunshot.” He didn’t say another word. He just picked up his mug and downed the remaining beer in one long drink.

Chandi smiled sadly while shaking his head. “That would never have happened, Stewart,” he assured his friend. “The gun wasn’t loaded. It was rather old and might even prove tricky getting ammo for it. I saw that the second the perp held it up when he came out of the bakery. It’s why I ordered my men to stand down and not to fire. My handling of the situation is not in question; it is Lambert’s failure to follow a direct order that is being investigated. Until the matter is settled, I’ve had to put my newest officer on suspension. God, I hated doing that.” It was this last statement which gave a clearer indication of what was really troubling the Chief of Police. “Some areas of the job are just plain crappy, but I bet the same can be said for any profession,” he muttered before draining his mug and holding it up. “Looks like it’s time for another one, huh?”

With another refill in his hand, Chandi softly inquired, “I take it Lucas knows about the bad dreams, just not all the nitty-gritty details; for instance, possibly the ending, right?”

Stewart needed time to think over what he just heard. This was information he didn’t have and he realized he was feeling considerably better knowing it. “No, and he’s not going to if I have anything to say about it,” he answered jokingly, knowing that was easier said than done.

When Chandi didn’t respond, it suddenly occurred to Stewart that his long-time friend was dealing with a few of his own demons. They had been talking for over an hour, well he had at any rate, and he recognized Chandi had thrown out several hints that something was not right at the station.

“Hey, enough about me already! I never did find out what happened at my shop. Tony doesn’t remember anything after getting hit, so he couldn’t tell me. What I don’t understand, is why you would suspend Brian Lambert. He was only doing his duty after all?”

Chandi shook his head yet again, his expression even sadder than before. “Not exactly, Stewart. I’m afraid Brian stepped a little too far over the line.” He looked somewhat bleary-eyed across the table at the frown of confusion on the other man’s handsome face. Clearing his throat and sitting up a bit straighter, Chandi began to speak in a soft voice. “When we got to the bank and were informed about the perp freaking at the sound of the sirens and taking off, we spread out and initiated a search. As you already know, we ended up chasing him down the alley and into your bakery. Poor Tony didn’t know what hit him, and I don’t know who was more surprised to see the other, the perp or your baking assistant. I think it was just a knee-jerk reaction that had the would-be robber hitting Tony like he did….very much like he did to Lucas, only a great deal harder which resulted in a serious concussion as well as stitches. A centimetre or two closer, and the gun would have hit the temple and then we’d have a case of manslaughter to deal with, along with everything else.”

Chandi threw back a large swallow of beer and almost choked. After wiping his mouth and eyes in an effort to get himself under control, he continued to slowly tell his story. “It took forty-five minutes of negotiations to talk the man into turning himself in. As soon as he walked outside brandishing his gun, I could see through his bluff. It was then Lambert disregarded my command to hold his fire and shot the suspect in the right shoulder. I can understand why it happened; unfortunately Internal Affairs may see things differently. The review board sat today. I did my best to defend my subordinate, explaining that he was young and inexperienced. That he had over-reacted this one time, but still had the potential to become a damn good cop and an asset to any force. Don’t know how much good it did though. So now’s the hardest part…waiting. It could be another week before we learn of the board’s decision as to whether I’ll be firing or re-instating Brian. I am so hoping it is the latter.”

Slumping against the back of the booth, Chandi hastily drained his fifth beer and briefly wondered if he should order a sixth. He decided to wait for his companion to catch up. “By the way, the perp is Daniel LeClair. You’ve heard of him, right? Been in trouble since his early teens; has done two short stretches for petty theft as well as one for break and entry. Guess he decided to go all out and see how good he’d be at armed robbery. He told me he wanted a large enough sum of cash to get out of Jade Heights once and for all. Well, looks like part of the dream is about to come true…the out of town part.”

Chandi couldn’t help but chuckle when Stewart had to spit a mouthful of beer back into his mug to avoid choking while laughing. He watched in amusement as foam oozed from the other man’s nose and mouth.

“I gotta say police weren’t the only ones kept busy that day; paramedics were too and so were medical staff at the hospital. I imagine it will take a while for folks to find something else to talk about. Surely the interest in this horrible event will wane eventually,” Chandi moaned as he lightly raked fingers through the numerous tight braids that covered his head. He stared for a few seconds at the two empty mugs sitting between them and asked in a voice that was slightly slurred, “Got time for another? I jogged here but will probably have to crawl home.” He smiled broadly, showing off some beautiful pearly-whites. “What the heck, I’m game if you are.”

“Yeah, I’ll have another.” Stewart reached in his pocket for some money. “Here, can you get our order while I pay a visit to the men’s room?” As he walked away, he began thinking about what Chandi had said. ‘I jogged here….’ He knew Chandi only ever ran when he was bothered by something or wanted to think. He also appreciated the time and advice his friend had given him this evening. Maybe that’s what Chandi needed too, someone to listen and let him take a turn a getting it all out. He needed to come up with some questions and hope he didn’t end up putting his foot in his mouth.

When Stewart returned, the beers were already waiting. Taking his seat across from his drinking buddy and seeing a distant expression on Chandi’s face, he decided to go straight for the jugular. “Okay, spill it!” He waited for Chandi to respond and when nothing happened he tried again. “Look, I’ve known you practically my whole life. I know why you run and it’s not for the sheer joy of it. So tell me what’s bothering you? Is it the shooting and I don’t mean Brian’s involvement in it, but the actual shooting? We’ve never had anything like that happen here. That couldn’t have been easy to see. Do you think you didn’t do a good enough job talking LeClair out of the bakery? It also couldn’t have been easy being in charge of a hostage situation. You just spent the better part of an hour letting me talk and it helped more than I can say. Now give me a chance to listen to the story from your side.” Stewart hoped that would be enough to get Chandi talking, so he picked up his beer, sat back and waited.

“Sorry, gotta take care of a little business first.” Chandi sent the other man a crooked grin and slid out of the booth. “Don’t let anyone spit in my beer, man.” He swayed off in the direction of the men’s room, chuckling to himself. He had always made it a practice to never over-indulge in public, his cut-off being four beers in the past. Tonight he was drinking as much as he would if at home or at a private party, only there he would have been eating at the same time. “Eric would not be pleased,” he mumbled, for some reason finding the thought a tad amusing.

He was sauntering back five minutes later and saw Stewart was no longer sitting alone. “Shit!” he muttered seeing his and Stewart’s partners sitting at their table, and Eric had the audacity to be drinking Chandi’s beer.

“Ah, look who dropped by for a cold one on their way home from the meeting, Chandi.” Stewart sounded a bit uncertain and looked distinctly uncomfortable wedged in the corner of the booth.

“Hi ya, Eric,” Chandi greeted cheerfully and clumsily dropped down next to the older man. He grinned up at his partner and cheekily hoped he could bluff his way out of this. “Good thing you’re here, cause I’m gonna need a lift home.”

Eric took a long pull of the cold beer; colour briefly infusing his cheeks as he quickly dashed a hand across his froth decorated upper lip. Winking at Chandi’s watchful and apparently rather apprehensive drinking partner who was currently making quick work shredding his beer coaster, Eric relaxed and slung his strong arm over the back of the booth. “I’d hoped you might,” he said with equanimous grace. “I’m pleased to see your running shoes on your feet, not your car keys in your hand.”

Chandi leaned against his partner in an attempt to convey his appreciation for the older man keeping the conversation so natural. He had never so much as hinted at the lifestyle they embraced to anyone, even though he was aware of several couples in town who were in discipline relationships. He didn’t know if he’d ever be ready to talk about it, even to his best friend.

Lucas finished off Stewart’s beer and placed the empty mug on the table. Then he reached over and gently pried the mangled piece of paper out of his partner’s hands. “I think these two young men have had quite enough to drink for one evening, so I’m all for getting out of here and going home.” The tone of his voice left little room for debate.

Stewart wasn’t at all pleased that Lucas had not only confiscated, but actually drank his beer. However, the subtle signs in Lucas’ posture told him this would not be the right time to bring it up. He wasn’t sure if he was in any trouble as this had never been an issue for them before, and he wasn’t willing to bring any on unnecessarily. When Lucas announced they would be leaving, he looked quickly over at Chandi and Eric hoping that they hadn’t picked up on the tone of finality in Lucas’ words. Yes, he definitely bought himself some trouble; he just wasn’t clear on what. Hell, he wasn’t clear on anything. The thought forced a short laugh out of him, which he quickly masked into a cough as he fell into step with Lucas.

Chandi blinked a little in surprise at the sudden departure of the other two men. A slight movement of Eric’s head let him know they’d be doing the same, so he hauled himself out of the booth one more time and followed in Stewart’s wake. He felt the solid, reassuring hand of his partner land on his shoulder and they walked out of the bar together.

The cooler night air hit them, increasing the effects of the beer Chandi and Stewart had consumed. They became even giddier than they already were.

Lucas rolled his eyes as he turned to Eric and held out his hand. “Thanks for the lift to the meeting, Eric. I’ll be taking Stewart home in his car.” He all but had to wrestle the keys out of Stewart’s pocket as the younger man swore he was okay to drive. Lucas knew Stewart was merely trying to maintain his independence in front of his friend, but the older man was having nothing of it.

“We’ll be seeing you guys,” Lucas called out, practically having to force his partner into the passenger seat. He shook his head, shut the door and walked around to the driver’s side. He stood for a few moments watching Eric steer a somewhat off-balanced Chandi to another car parked a short distance down the street.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

On the ride home, Stewart wouldn’t talk to Lucas. He didn’t even look over at him. Lucas had embarrassed him in front of his friend and very possibly given away the fact that Stewart was a Brat, or so his alcohol fogged brain kept telling him. Well if Lucas thought he would win this round, he was mistaken! Stewart had no intention of speaking first. He’d done nothing to warrant being treated that way. Lucas could have at least waited until their friends were gone. Turning his head, he looked out the side window for the remainder of the drive. He was glad it was only a short distance to their home because by the time they got there, he was feeling decidedly ill.

Lucas couldn’t help but smile to himself. So he was being given the silent treatment, huh? That was all right, because he planned to change that once they were home and comfortably seated.

Not deviating from his plan, as soon as they walked through the door, Lucas took Stewart’s hand and gently towed him into living room where he sat them both down on the large sofa. “Looks like you might have over-indulged a bit tonight, love. I know you’re still stressed from the events of a couple of weeks ago and I think before your drinking escalates, we really should discuss it.” He held up his hand when he saw signs of dispute crossing his partner’s handsome young face. “I know, I know; you think we’ve already discussed it into the ground and there’s nothing more to be said. But there is, sweetheart, especially in light of the nightmares continuing.” He nodded his head somewhat sadly before softly admitting, “Yeah, I know you’re still being tormented by them. I just wish you would have been more up front with me.”

“I don’t have a drinking problem if that’s what you’re thinking. I only had a few more than I normally do when I go to the lounge. The only reason I over-indulged, as you put it, was because Chandi and I were talking and just lost track of how many we had,” Stewart responded, not realizing he had given away too much information about the number of times he had been to the bar. “And as for the nightmare, I’ve already told you what happens. There’s no point in continuing to rehash that. Can’t we just forget about it and go to bed? Besides I really think I need something for my stomach. I’m not feeling so good.” He placed his hand over his stomach for added effect. Actually he was feeling much better since getting out of the moving car, but he would do anything not to have this discussion.

“What you need for your stomach is a freer conscious, my love.” Lucas’ raised eyebrow let it be known he wasn’t at all fooled by his partner’s attempt at being evasive. “So, we are going to sit right here until you not only tell me what is really bothering you, but also own up to just how often you’ve paid the lounge a visit over the last couple of weeks.”

Stewart inwardly cursed himself and the beer as he remembered he had handed that information to Lucas. But he wasn’t ready to tell him anything yet. He wanted answers too, and he figured the best defense was a good offense. “Do you really want to know what’s bothering me about that day, Lucas? You put your life on the line to protect money! And it wasn’t even your money, not that that would have made a difference, but every penny of it is insured!” Stewart had jumped up from the sofa and was pacing, his voice rising the angrier he got. “It would all have been replaced, but you can’t be! You might be a Top, Luc, but I don’t think that makes you bullet proof.” Stewart stopped just in front of Lucas, his breathing heavy from his tirade and all the anger he had been holding in. He was a little surprised too, because he hadn’t realized how angry he was about Lucas’ actions until this moment.

Lucas reached up, grabbed his partner’s hand and with one swift yank, had the younger man sitting on his lap. “Deep breaths before you explode, Stewart,” He calmly instructed as he rubbed a soothing hand over his lover’s trembling back. “It wasn’t the money I was trying to protect; it was my staff and the two customers who happened to be present at the time. And even if I say so myself, I did have the situation under control and the agitated man was calming down some. That is, right until the wail of sirens had him going ballistic. Trust me; it was never in the plans for me to be slammed across the face with his weapon. And even at that point, I would have given him what money was available had it been enough to placate him. Unfortunately before I could do so, I was seeing stars and he was running out of the rear entrance of the bank.”

Stewart turned his face into Lucas’ shoulder; his anger and resolve to ‘turn the tables’ dissolving at the reassurances from his partner. He knew he played a part in that scar as well. “Yeah, the sirens and me,” Stewart said as he remembered how he had hurried out of Lucas’ office when he realized what was happening. “I’m so sorry about that. I was afraid and just wanted you to give him the money. I know now I only made things worse,” he sadly confessed as he lightly touched the fading scar on Lucas’ face; tears beginning to form in his eyes.

“It was not your fault, my love. While you may not have helped the situation, you weren’t responsible for its’ escalation. Neither of us has ever faced something like this before and hopefully won’t have to do so again. That said, seeing as you’ve brought up a matter of disobedience we’ve yet to deal with….” Lucas left the rest unsaid and looked somewhat questioningly at his partner. The older man was slowly beginning to suspect this unresolved issue may lie at the core of his Brat’s uncharacteristic behaviour and even possibly the nightmares.

Stewart was surprised. He hadn’t, at the time, thought his actions were disobedient. He had only wanted Lucas out of the line of fire. Thoughts of his own safety flew out the window as he’d watched the man he loved stand up to a gun-wielding criminal. But that is what Lucas had wanted too; his life-partner out of the line of fire. Lucas had told him to stay and he’d disobeyed.

He now knew this was more complicated than just an issue of disobedience. In the short conversation they had since coming home, two of his fears had been put to rest. Even Chandi had told him his fears about the gun being able to fire were wrong. Once he’d made up his mind, he told Lucas everything.

By the time Stewart was finished, Lucas knew about his frequent trips to the lounge, how the nightmare really ended, and even the residual anger he felt about Lucas’ actions that day. Now he sat watching Lucas’ face and hoping he would be forgiven for keeping so much from him.

Lucas sighed as he gazed into his partner’s sad brown eyes. Pulling Stewart’s head down, he dropped a light kiss on it. “So what all this comes down to is you burdening yourself by carrying a load that would have been so much lighter had you shared it with me. It was a load that disturbed your sleep with nightmares and weighed heavily on your mind, causing you to resort to lying and visiting the lounge a little too often. You were somewhat piqued by my actions at the bank and as a result carried on a silent two-week tantrum instead of discussing it all up front. Does that about cover it all, love?” Lucas always strived in situations like this to insure they both understood the reason behind what would take place next.

Stewart didn’t want to answer the question. When put like that, it sounded so much worse than his actual admission. “Yeah, I guess that pretty much covers it,” he reluctantly agreed, knowing he needed to put this all in Lucas’ hands and then accept the absolution that the punishment would bring.

Never one to postpone the inevitable, Lucas lightly patted his Brat’s hip to encourage Stewart to get to his feet. Once the younger man was upright, Lucas unzipped Stewart’s jeans and tugged them along with the boxers down to mid-thigh. Then he assisted him in settling himself face down over the temporarily empty lap.

“We both know why we’re doing this, Stewart, so I see no need to reiterate. It’s time to put this matter to rest once and for all.” That firmly said, Lucas raised his right arm and brought it down with a resounding wallop on Stewart’s vulnerable backside. He set about proficiently spanking every inch of his Brat’s butt, before focusing for several moments on the sit spot and then ending the punishment. His hand was stinging when he finally slipped it under Stewart’s shirt to rhythmically caress his back in an attempt to soothe the sobbing man.

“Shh, love. It’s over now. You’re going to be fine.” Lucas began a litany of words, even knowing his beloved partner wasn’t yet able to hear them.

Stewart calmed down after a couple of minutes and finally pushed to stand up. He carefully pulled his boxers up, but left his jeans pooled at his feet and sat back in Lucas’ lap, making sure not to put too much pressure on his sore and hot backside. He was still sniffling when he laid his head down on Lucas’ shoulder, letting the nearness of his partner comfort him. Finally he lifted his head just enough to look into Lucas’s eyes. “Luc, I’m sorry for everything. I shouldn’t have kept so much from you and I realize now it was a mistake. Do you forgive me?”

“Of course, and I always will just like I expect you to forgive my shortcomings, sweetheart,” Lucas assured his teary-eyed partner with a none-too-gentle hug. He smiled when he felt the man in his arms relax and lay his head back down. They sat there for several minutes as both men dealt with the closure of this matter in their own way.

Not wanting Stewart to fall asleep where they were, Lucas leaned down to remove his Brat’s shoes in order to rid the younger man of his jeans. Next, he teasingly cajoled him onto his feet and up the stairs to the master bedroom. Once in the en suite, Lucas quickly divested Stewart of his shirt, boxers and socks; then lovingly washed his naked Brat’s face and patted it dry.

“Brush your teeth and do whatever else you want to do to get ready for bed, love, while I get undressed,” Lucas instructed, turning Stewart towards the sink.

They both finished their nightly routine about the same time, so Lucas led Stewart into their room and got him settled in their bed. Then he spooned in behind his lover, relishing the feel of skin on skin. He tenderly kissed his lover’s bare shoulders and softly murmured endearments into his ear. He was soon rewarded with the deep sigh followed by light snoring from this man whom he loved with all his heart.
